Drawn To You

Hand-drawn fonts are available in high-resolution versions from Sketch Type. Volume 2 makes it simple to incorporate the look and texture of hand-drawn lettering into any project, no pencil required. These quirky, whimsical fonts incorporate the gestural, handmade qualities of their makers; the letters are raster images, cut out onto a transparent layer, ready for placement in your design project. The image files are huge and are available only on a DVD. Each DVD contains 20 original hand-drawn type sets in 60 files (300 dpi/transparent grayscale/photoshop PSD format). Characters vary from three to six inches in height and each set contains upper and lowercase letters, numbers, symbols, and Spanish characters. PSD files can be edited in Photoshop or placed using InDesign or Illustrator.

The Sketch Artists

Want to feature hand-drawn type in a project but don’t have the time to create some from scratch? SketchType could be for you. SketchType Volume 2 is a collection of 20 original hand-drawn type sets created by California-based The Organic Type. The collection comes as 60, 300dpi, transparent greyscale, Photoshop (PSD) files. Each set contains uppercase, lowercase, numerals, symbols, and Spanish language characters. “We’ll spend a couple of days doing research and then drawing several pages of the letter A in different ways,” explains The Organic Type’s Andy Sundblad – who also runs the Bay Area graphic design studio PicturesWords – of the creation process. “Then we’ll revise the ones we are going to move forward with and execute those entire alphabets,” he continues. “Each letter is drawn by hand using pencils, charcoal, conté, ink brushes, watercolour paint brushes, paint, and any other art supplies we come across. Each face can take anywhere from two to four days to complete. Once each is done, it is scanned in, cut-out, and organized into a Photoshop document.” Individual characters can be up to six inches in height and are ready to edit with Photoshop, or place using Illustrator, InDesign and other packages compatible with Photoshop Files. SketchType Volume 2 is available as a digital download from theorganictype.com

The fonts that aren’t fonts

TheOrganicType has released SketchType Vol. 2, which features 20 new hand-drawn type sets. Created by graphic designers using pencils, charcoal, conté, ink brushes, watercolor paint brushes, and other art supplies, the final results were scanned and optimized as PSD files. That’s right, these are not font files; they’re images that you’ll have to hand set and compose. But your time and effort will give your designs a unique textured look from letters that look like wispy grass and branches to ornate, gothic-inspired letters. SketchType Vol.2 retails for $249, but individual sets are available from $29-49. Visit www.theorganictype.com for more info.
